FEBRUARY 2024 MEETING
Avon Floral Art’s final Club night was a great success with many members and friends coming along to say goodbye and to watch new demonstrator, Leena Patel. It was Leena’s first dem since passing her demonstrator’s test in the Autumn and she didn’t disappoint. With no sign of nerves she gave a lovely, colourful dem with her title ‘Holidays, Food and Hot Sun’ and made everyone wish their holidays would be here soon. Leena has kindly given us permission to post a photo of one of her ancillary arrangements.
We’d like to thank all our members, past and present, and friends, for supporting us over the last 60+ years. It’s been a wonderfully active Club but it’s now time to move on. Finally, thanks must be given to our wonderful Committee who have provided inspiration and enthusiasm, fun and friendship, and sheer hard work, over many, many years. Thank you.
We will be formally closing the Club at our AGM on Wednesday, 13 March when, after business is concluded, we’ll be having coffee & cake at St Andrew’s Church Hall, Shottery, (11 am-1 pm) so please come along and say goodbye.
JANUARY MEETING
Our January meeting on 8 January welcomed Nick Martin, local wildlife photographer, with his illustrated talk 'Wildlife in my Garden'. It was a really interesting evening which everyone enjoyed.

NOVEMBER MEETING
Christmas came early last week when members and friends enjoyed a simply fabulous Christmas demonstration, 'Gingle all the Way', from Yorkshire's Judy Watker. We had sledges, reindeer, the nutcracker, so many baubles and glitz, and the most beautiful flowers - it was stunning. Judy has kindly given us permission to post photos of all her arrangements - thanks so much Judy and we hope to see you again soon.

Julie has kindly given us permission to post photos of her arrangements - many thanks Julie.

It is Avon Floral Art's Diamond Anniversary this year and to celebrate such a great milestone, members were invited to a special Afternoon Tea at The Arden Hotel in Stratford upon Avon. 30 members enjoyed the opportunity to catch up and chat over tea and a glass of bubbly. Member Jill Jones baked the celebration cake and Helen Hunter gave a short talk about the history of the Club and all the fun they had had over the years including competing at Chelsea and visits to international flower shows. Our meeting on Monday, 10th October gave members the chance of trying some new crafts. We all agreed that the evening was a great success and it was very well attended by members. Huge thanks to Viv, Heather, Mal and Alison for their hard work in making it such a success. In light of the very sad news of the passing of our Queen, it has been decided that out of respect to Her Majesty we will cancel our Club meeting due to be held on Monday 12th September.
As our long serving head of state Queen Elizabeth II has, throughout her whole reign and life, shown us all a deep dedication, sense of duty and a respect to the country and it's people. It is how we can show our respect and follow her example by fondly remembering her and the family by cancelling our meeting.
Our next meeting is scheduled for the 10th October at the school and we will send out more information nearer the time.
It is with sadness that we send this message but feel sure that you will all understand the circumstances.
SEPTEMBER MEEETING CANCELLED
Our next meeting is on Monday, 12 September when Minh Lane will be demonstrating "Eastern Promise". Hope to see you there.

SHAKESPEARE'S WORLD OF FLOWERS AT THE GUILD CHAPEL
We were delighted to have been asked by the Friends of the Guild Chapel in Stratford upon Avon to stage a flower festival in the Chapel with the title "Shakespeare's World of Flowers". The festival ran from Friday, 29 July to Monday 1 August and we were pleased to welcome about 600 visitors from our area and from further afield, both from the UK and overseas.
The festival was opened by special guest, RSC Artistic Director Emeritus, Gregory Doran, at a Preview Evening on Thursday. Greg read sonnets and spoke about Shakespeare's plays that mention flowers, which inspired the theme of the flower festival. Over £1,000 was raised for The Guild Chapel.
Our special thanks go to everyone involved in the design, staging, publicity, stewarding, children's flower trail, watering, clearing up, and all 29 flower arrangers from Avon Floral Art. We would also like to thank the volunteers from The Guild Chapel for their invaluable help during the festival.
The photo below shows Gregory Doran with Festival organisers Ann Horsley, Viv Handy and Bev Short.

In the week leading up to the flower festival we took the opportunity of renting a vacant shop window in Bell Court to advertise the festival. We filled the window with flyers and sunflower arrangements which looked absolutely beautiful and they certainly caught the attention of passers by. Here are the photos.

JUILY GARDEN VISIT
On Tuesday, 12 July, Club members and friends visited the beautiful Morton Hall Gardens near Inkberrow. We were shown around the gardens by the house owner who explained that when they bought the house in 2007 the gardens were totally overgrown, and together with landscape architect Charles Chesshire, they transformed the gardens into what we see today. After our tour finished we enjoyed afternoon tea on the terrace in front of the hall. Many thanks to Committee Member Sally Roberts for organising such a lovely afternoon. Here's a selection of photos.

We held a Mad Hatter's Tea Party recently in Viv Handy's beautiful garden in Stratford. We were so lucky as the rains held off for the tea party itself but as soon as everything had been cleared away, we had torrential rain! Very many thanks to Viv, the Committee and Members for providing delicious cakes and endless cups of tea. It was lovely to see so many members and we were delighted to raise £388. GILL'S WORKSHOP
On the following day, Gill ran a workshop for members of the Club and we learned how to make an armature using aluminium wire and then use it in a hand tied arrangement or on a vase. Everyone enjoyed it and it was fun to learn a new way with wire. Thank you Gill.

We are planning to hold Christmas wreath making workshops on 9 & 10 December which hopefully will be after this current lockdown is over. All the details are in the poster below. If this isn't permitted due to further Covid restrictions, it will be a virtual Zoom workshop with wreath kits being delivered beforehand. Hope you can join us!

As of mid November 2020, we still have no news about when our Club meetings can resume but as soon we can restart, we'll let everyone know on this website and on our Facebook page - we hope it won't be too long before we can meet again.
Your Committee has reluctantly taken the decision to cancel all Club meetings planned for Autumn (September through to December). Sadly two demonstrators had to cancel for personal reasons and our planned Christmas Open event in November at a local theatre has also had to be cancelled. We are following Government advice closely and when restrictions permit, we will be back! Rest assured that your committee are actively working behind the scenes as to how we move forward in the coming months.
If anyone has been making any flower arrangements, no doubt using your garden material, do let us know by sending us some photos which we can put on our website or Facebook page. Our email address is at the top of this page.
There are also several Facebook pages dedicated to floral art. Have a look at "Friends of NAFAS", "Flower Arrangers", "Flower Arrangers and their Gardens", "South Midlands Area of NAFAS". Many NAFAS Areas are showing videos of dems by Area and National Demonstrators on YouTube as well as on Facebook.
We will let you know as soon as we can as to when we can start our flower club meetings again. In the meantime - stay safe.
MARCH MEETING
About 30 members attended our AGM last week. After the business side of the evening finished, we were pleased to welcome Jo Sparrow, Co-ordinator, from our charity of the year, Echoes Child Bereavement Support at the Shakespeare Hospice, who explained how the unit supports bereaved children. We were delighted to present her with our cheque for £521. The photo shows Avon Chairman
Viv Handy and Jo Sparrow.
This was followed by member Ann Horsley showing us how to create a Still Life design with her title 'In Past Times'. I'm sure we learnt a lot and we realised that it isn't nearly as simple as it looks! Thanks Ann

SEPTEMBER MEETING
We were delighted to welcome Club Members Bev Short and Ann Horsley with ‘It Takes Two’ at our meeting on 9th September”. As most of you know, Bev is a NAFAS Area Demonstrator, and Ann, a former NAFAS Demonstrator – both incredibly talented floral arrangers, and coming together for one night only! They each made lovely 2 designs and then took to the stage together for their final design. It was so entertaining and absolutely hilarious, I think everyone really enjoyed it. A huge thank you to Bev and Ann for stepping in and we hope you can be persuaded to do it again sometime! They have kindly given permission for photos of most of their designs to be published.

On 1st August The Guild Chapel in Stratford celebrated Lammas Day - traditionally the date when bread is baked from the first ripened grain of the harvest and is brought to churches to be consecrated. We were delighted to be asked by the Chapel to create 4 arrangements celebrating this harvest - and we also added a few simple arrangements to the windowsills! Many thanks to those members who created such beautiful arrangements.

** GIN AND FLOWERS LUNCH - FRIDAY, 3 MAY - NATIONAL FLOWER ARRANGER'S DAY
We love any excuse for a lunch and a flower dem and we all had a great time last Friday. We were greeted with a gin cocktail or mocktail on arrival and then enjoyed a 2 course lunch. After lunch, three of our members - Bev Short, Helen Hunter and Sue Rack - made lovely contemporary arrangements which were then raffled. Unfortunately, the lighting wasn't so good in the room and some of the photos are a little fuzzy. I've picked out the best but if anyone has taken any good photos, please could you email them to me (suerack48@gmail.com) and I can add them to the website. Many thanks

OCTOBER MEETING
Vanessa Wellock from Ilkley in West Yorkshire was our guest demonstrator at our October meeting with 'All in a Day's Work'. She was absolutely brilliant - such a talented lady. Vanessa is taking her National Demonstrator's Test at the end of October and we're sure she'll soon be going 'national'.
Vanessa has kindly given us permission to publish a couple of photos.
